Former Shepherd University pitcher Charlie Gordon (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake/Anne Arundel CC) has signed a professional baseball contract with the Normal CornBelters of the Frontier League. Gordon earned WVIAC Pitcher of the Week honors while at Shepherd and was a member of the WVIAC championship team in 2009.
Hal Lanier, former major league infielder, coach, and manager, signed Gordon. Lanier was a coach for the St. Louis Cardinals on the 1982 World Series and 1985 National League Champion teams. He was also manager for the Houston Astros and was NL Manager of the Year in 1986 for bringing the Astros to their first division title and best record in team history.
“Charles’ arm strength impressed me at the tryout camp,” said Lanier. “His speed was 92 mph with a good breaking ball, and I look to fill him in the starting rotation.”
The CornBelters start their season May 21 vs. the Evansville Otters.
