    Carey was a triple-threat running back for the Shepherd football team from 1948-51.  He was a member of the Ram basketball team for two seasons.  Carey was a four-time All-Conference honoree, gaining First Team WVIAC honors as a senior in 1951.  Also as a standout return specialist, Carey led the WVIAC in kickoff returns in 1951. He led the Rams in total offense for three seasons and topped the Rams in scoring for a pair of years.  Carey was also one of 10 Shepherd football players honored by the WVIAC on the All Conference Team for the period from 1924-74.  A standout in the classroom, Carey was named to Who's Who among American colleges and universities.  After Shepherd, Carey went on to begin a successful coaching career at Chafee (CA) High School as a football and water polo coach.  He later coached football and basketball at Cameron (WV) High School for over 20 years.
