Reel was a four-year player at defensive tackle for the Shepherd football team from 1967-71. He was scouted by several NFL teams as helped lead the Rams to a 7-1-2 overall mark as a senior team captain in 1971. Reel gained NAIA Honorable Mention All-American honors and signed to play with the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League.
