SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Jaila Bryant scored 18 points and Breanna Butler added 17 to lead Wheeling Jesuit to a 90-63 win over Shepherd University in MEC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.
Bryant added seven rebounds and game-highs of five assists and four steals for the Cardinals. Taneka Lewis added 14 points, while Jaana Motton had 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Shepherd was led by
junior guard Rachel Johnson (Frederick, MD/Frederick) with 17 points. Johnson hit on 7-of-14 shots with a 1-of-2 effort from three-point range. She was 2-for-2 from the foul line.
Senior forward Jimyse Brown (Rankin, Pa./Winchester Thurston), the lone senior for the Rams, poured in 15 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds on Senior Day. She added two blocks and a steal. Freshman forward Liz Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) contributed eight points and five boards.
Wheeling Jesuit took a 48-30 lead into the break as Butler (13) and Bryant (11) combined for 24 first half points.
The Rams shot 37.7 percent (20-53) from the floor for the game, 33.3 percent (3-9) from three-point range, and 85 percent (17-20) from the line.
Wheeling Jesuit connected at 54.2 percent (32-59) from the floor, 27.3 percent (3-11) from beyond the arc, and 76.5 percent (26-34) from the charity stripe.
Wheeling Jesuit had a 36-26 advantage in rebounds. The Rams forced 21 turnovers and committed 30.
Shepherd falls to 2-20, 2-16 in MEC action, while Wheeling Jesuit improves to 12-11, 8-4. The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to UVa-Wise for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
