Shepherd blanks Charleston

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Seventh-ranked Shepherd University survived a scare from the University of Charleston before pulling a away in the fourth quarter for a 17-0 win in WVIAC football action at University of Charleston Stadium last Saturday.
 

Shepherd took a 3-0 lead with 13:06 left in the fourth quarter on a 36-yard field goal by senior kicker Ricky Schmitt (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem). 
 

Shepherd increased its lead to 10-0 at the 11:50 mark when senior All-American safety Dan Peters (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria) returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown.
 

Shepherd ran its lead to 17-0 when junior running back Dervon Wallace (Lusby, MD/ Calvert/WV State), who rushed for a game-high 143 yards on 20 carries, scored on a 23-yard scamper with 8:05 left in the game.
 

Senior running back Bryan Wright (Augusta, WV/Hampshire/WVU) added 48 yards on nine carries for the Rams.
 

Senior quarterback Dan Chlebowski (Greencastle, PA/ Greencastle, PA) completed 16-of-21 passes for 105 yards, while Corey Isner completed 11-of-20 passes for 107 yards for the Golden Eagles.
 

Josh Culbertson had seven carries for 31 yards to lead the Charleston rushing game.
 

Wallace also led the Ram receivers with five catches for 26 yards, while sophomore wide receiver Craig Tremel (Lilly, PA/Penn Cambria) added four receptions for 33 yards. Terrance Spencer had five catches for 29 yards to lead Charleston.
 

Shepherd limited Charleston to 182 yards of total offense en route to its fourth shutout effort of the year.
 

Senior linebacker Todd Edmondson (Finksburg, MD/ Westminster) led the Rams with 13 tackles. Peters and junior linebacker Louis Corum (Manassas, VA/Westfield) each added nine stops. Senior defensive end Andre Henderson (Bowie, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) added eight more. Anthony Smith had 13 tackles to pace Charleston.
 

Peters was named WVIAC Defensive Player of the Week for his outstanding effort. Peters recorded his 24th career interception to move into a tie with Shepherd Hall-of-Famer Everett Yore for second place on the Ram all-time interceptions list.
