Shepherd was a charter member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) in 1924 and remained a member throughout the league's history (1924-2013). The WVIAC moved into the NCAA Division II ranks in 1994 after a long affiliation with the NAIA. The Rams briefly held a dual conference affiliation as a member of the Mason-Dixon Conference from 1964-68. Shepherd was a member of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) from 2013-19 before joining the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) for 2019-20.
