Shepherd Defeated by Bloomsburg in NCAA II Playoffs

12/2/2006 5:01:00 PM

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Jamar Brittingham rushed 33 times for 171 yards and scored the winning touchdown with 3:36 left in the game to lift sixth-ranked Bloomsburg University to a 24-21 win over fifth-ranked Shepherd University in NCAA II Playoff action at Ram Stadium.

Shepherd took a 7-0 lead with 9:04 left in the first quarter, when sophomore quarterback Tyler Lazear teamed with junior wide receiver Mark Springirth on a five-yard scoring play.

The Huskies tied the game minutes later on a 12-yard run by Josh Heck.

Bloomsburg took a 13-7 lead with 1:32 left in the first quarter when Dan Latorre connected on a 37-yard scoring strike to Brahin Balil.  Jon Koenig's extra point attempted was blocked by senior defensive lineman Nick Costello.

Shepherd took a 14-13 advantage with three seconds left in the first quarter when junior running back Dervon Wallace took a pass from Lazear and raced 53 yards for a score.

Jon Koenig nailed a 33-yard field goal with 6:30 left in the second quarter to give the Huskies a 16-14 lead at the half.

Wallace, who rushed for a team-high 64 yards on 18 carries, scored on a three-yard plunge with 7:23 remaining in the third quarter, to give Shepherd a 21-16 advantage.

Bloomsburg drove 87 yards on nine plays in the game-winning drive.  A 44-yard pass from Latorre to Balil on third-and-five set up Brittingham's game-winner.

Shepherd had a pair of drives thwarted by interceptions in the game's final minutes.

The Shepherd loss overshadowed a great individual performance by senior All-American free safety Dan Peters.  Peters picked off a total of three passes to finish the season with 14 interceptions, to tie the NCAA II single-season record.  He ended his career with 32 interceptions to lead the WVIAC and rank in a tie for second all-time in NCAA II history.  Peters became the first player in collegiate football history to win back-to-back individual interception titles (Peters led NCAA II with 13 interceptions in 2005).
