ATHENS, W.Va. -- Senior All-American candidate Dervon Wallace (Lusby, MD/Calvert) rushed 36 times for 153 yards and a touchdown to lead 18th-ranked Shepherd University to a 41-17 win over Concord University in WVIAC football action at Callaghan Stadium on Saturday.
Shepherd took a 7-0 lead with 7:03 left in the first quarter when senior running back Vincent Riggs (Poolesville, MD/Poolesville) scored on a six-yard run.
Concord cut the Ram lead to 7-3 when Zach Boyd kicked a 36-yard field goal with 14:14 left in the second quarter.
Shepherd took a 14-3 with 8:19 left in the second period when junior quarterback Tyler Lazear (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) teamed with senior wide receiver Mark Springirth (Germantown, MD/Watkins Mill) on a seven-yard touchdown pass. The score was set up by a 20-yard punt return by freshman Deante Steele (Woodbridge, VA/ Potomac).
Concord answered back with 3:40 left in the second quarter when Colby Whitfield blocked a Zach Beach (Clarksburg, MD/Urbana) punt and Tim Bundy picked it up and scored on a 40-yard return to cut the lead to 14-10.
Shepherd upped its lead to 20-10 with 1:30 left in the half when Lazear fired a 25-yard scoring strike to junior tight end Ryan Lavin (Centreville, VA/Westfield) on a fourth-and-five play. The extra point attempt by junior kicker Bryan Beverage (Romney, WV/Hampshire) was no good.
The Mountain Lions cut the deficit to 20-17 with 7:15 left in the third quarter when Thomas Frazier tossed a 14-yard scoring pass to Dustin Greenwood.
Wallace scored on a two-yard run with 10:10 remaining in the fourth quarter to increase the Rams lead to 27-17.
Riggs, who rushed for 88 yards on 16 carries, added his second touchdown of the day on a two-yard plunge with 4:35 left in the fourth quarter to give the Rams a 34-17 advantage.
Freshman running back Jimmy Sutch (Hagerstown, MD/St. James) raced 21 yards for a touchdown with 2:48 left in the game to complete the scoring.
Lazear completed 9-of-14 passes for 71 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He was replaced by sophomore Brett Zirkle (Stuarts Draft, VA/Stuarts Draft), who completed 6-of-8 passes for 46 yards.
Frazier completed 20-of-38 passes for 183 yards for Concord.
Junior linebacker Louis Corum (Manassas, VA/Westfield) and junior cornerback Taros Harris (Cheaspeake Beach, MD/Calvert) led the Rams with seven tackles each. Harris also had an interception, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Senior outside linebacker Joey Hooks (Montgomery Village, MD/Watkins Mill) added six stops.
