Rams Down West Liberty

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Senior All-American candidate Dervon Wallace (Lusby, MD/Calvert) rushed 37 times for 280 yards and three touchdowns to lead 15th-ranked Shepherd University to a 38-21 win over West Liberty in WVIAC football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday

Shepherd took a 7-0 lead with 10:35 left in the second quarter when junior quarterback Tyler Lazear (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) teamed with sophomore wide receiver Nasser Muhammad (Silver Spring, MD/Sidwell Friends) on a 31-yard scoring play to give the Rams a 7-0 lead. 

Wallace broke loose for a career-long 86-yard scoring jaunt with 7:38 left in the first quarter increase the Ram lead to 14-0. 

Shepherd took a 17-0 lead into the break when junior kicker Bryan Beverage (Romney, WV/Hampshire) connected on a 24-yard field goal with 23 seconds left in the first quarter. 

The Rams increased their lead to 24-0 when Lazear connected with junior tight end Ryan Lavin (Centreville, VA/Westfield) on a 33-yard scoring strike with 7:34 left in the third quarter. 

Hilltopper quarterback Zach Amedro tossed s six-yard touchdown pass to Almonzo Banks to cut the lead to 24-7 with 2:14 left in the third quarter.

Shepherd answered back on a three-yard scoring run by Wallace with 13:29 left in the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 31-7. 

Eddie Hill hauled in a 13-yard scoring pass from Amedro to get the Hilltoppers to within 17 points at 31-14 with 10:21 left in the fourth quarter. 

Wallace, who earned WVIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second straight week, scored his third touchdown of the day on a two-yard plunge with 1:47 left in the contest to give the Rams a 38-14 advantage. 

Amedro teamed with Banks on a 23-yard scored with 31 seconds remaining to complete the scoring. 

Lazear completed 9-of-16 passes for 156 yards, while Amedro was 37-of-57 for 383 yards. 

Banks had 15 receptions for 139 yards to lead the West Liberty receivers. Lavin (63 yards), Muhammad (47) and senior wide receiver Mark Springirth (Germantown, MD/Watkins Mill) (46) each had three catches for the Rams.

The Ram defense was led by junior cornerback Dustin Smith (Germantown, MD/Northwest) with 14 tackles, including 13 solos. Junior defensive end Mike Spiegelberg (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) added seven tackles with six solo stops and a pair of sacks. The Rams sacked Amedro seven times on the day. 

Smith and junior cornerback Taros Harris (Cheaspeake Beach, MD/Calvert) each had interceptions for the Rams.
