Shepherd Defeats Charleston

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Junior quarterback Tyler Lazear (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) completed 11-of-14 passes for 218 yards and three touchdowns and senior running back Dervon Wallace (Lusby, MD/Calvert) rushed 25 times for 138 yards and a touchdown to lead 21st-ranked Shepherd University to a 49-13 win over University of Charleston in WVIAC football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday

Charleston took a 6-0 lead with 2:23 left in the first quarter when quarterback DaRonte Hunter scored on a two-yard run.

The Rams answered back with 12:33 remaining in the second quarter when Lazear teamed with sophomore wide receiver Nasser Muhammad (Silver Spring, MD/Sidwell Friends) on a two-yard scoring pass. Junior kicker Bryan Beverage (Romney, WV/Hampshire) added the extra point to give the Rams a 7-6 lead.

Minutes later Shepherd took a 14-6 lead when Wallace raced 28 yards for a score.

The Golden Eagles got within 14-13 with 2:45 left in the second quarter when Hunter tossed a 61-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Spencer.

Lazear teamed with freshman wide receiver Nikkolai Norrell (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) on a 44-yard scoring strike with 2:45 left in the second quarter to up the Ram lead to 21-13.

Shepherd took a 28-13 lead into intermission when freshman Deante Steele (Woodbridge, VA/ Potomac) fielded a Wes Sherrill punt at the Shepherd 32-yard line and raced 68 yards for a score with 54 second left in the half. Steele, who earned WVIAC Co-Special Teams Player of the Week honors, became the first Ram since Dustin Dudinski (2005 vs. WVU Tech) to return a punt for a touchdown.

Lazear fired a 70-yard scoring strike to senior wide receiver Mark Springirth (Germantown, MD/Watkins Mill) to up the Ram lead to 35-13 with 12:22 left in the third quarter.

Freshman running back Jimmy Sutch (Hagerstown, MD/St. James) raced 32 yards for a touchdown to give the Rams a 42-13 advantage with 23 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Rams completed the scoring when senior running back Vincent Riggs (Poolesville, MD/Poolesville) dashed 11 yards for a scored with 6:06 left in the fourth quarter.

The Rams amassed 517 yards of total offense in the contest.

Redshirt-freshman linebacker Brian Taylor (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach) paced the Rams defense with nine tackles. Senior strong safety Jerome Quinata (Woodbridge, VA/C.D. Hylton) added eight tackles, while senior outside linebacker Joey Hooks (Montgomery Village, MD/Watkins Mill) recorded seven stops.
