Fifteenth-ranked Shepherd Wins Regular Season Finale

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Senior Harlon Hill candidate Dervon Wallace (Lusby, MD/Calvert) rushed 27 times for school records of 311 yards and five touchdowns to lead 15th-ranked Shepherd University to a 42-7 win over West Virginia State in WVIAC football action at Ram Stadium on Nov. 3. The win coupled with West Liberty's 27-13 win over University of Charleston gives the Rams an unprecendented fourth consecutive outright WVIAC title. 

Shepherd took a 7-0 lead with 9:06 left in the first quarter when Wallace scored on a four-yard run. 

Wallace scored on a four-yard jaunt with 1:09 remaining in the first quarter to increase the Ram lead to 14-0. 

Wallace dashed 13 yards for a score with 10:32 left in the second quarter to give the Rams a 21-0 advantage. 

A 79-yard touchdown run by Wallace with 7:09 left in the second quarter upped the Ram lead to 28-0. 

The Rams took a 35-0 lead into halftime when sophomore quarterback Brett Zirkle (Stuarts Draft, VA/Stuart Draft) scored on a one-yard run with 32 seconds left in the half. 

A 10-yard scoring run by Wallace with 3:32 left in the third quarter set a new Shepherd record for most touchdowns (5) in a game and gave the Rams a 42-7 lead. 

Wallace was named WVIAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week for his outstanding play.  He gained weekly conference honors for the fifth time this season.

West Virginia State quarterback Nick Mullins teamed with tight end Mike Jones on a three-yard scoring play with 38 seconds left in the game as the Yellow Jackets avoided the shutout. 

Kevin O'Brien completed 17-of-27 passes for 165 yards to lead State, while Zirkle came off the bench to connect on 5-of-6 passes for 51 yards to pace the Rams. 

Brian Mitchell rushed 15 times for 107 yards to lead West Virginia State. Senior running back Vincent Riggs (Poolesville, MD/ Poolesville) added 98 yards on 14 carries for the Rams. 

The Ram defense was led by sophomore free safety Layton Hersh (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key) with a game-high 13 tackles including five solos. Junior linebacker Walt Gouveia (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) added nine tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, while senior cornerback Dustin Smith (Germantown, MD/Northwest) and redshirt-freshman Marlon Hoy (Montgomery Village, MD/Watkins Mill), and junior defensive end Mike Spiegelberg (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) each added seven tackles. 

Brandon Truesdale had nine tackles and an interception to pace the Yellow Jacket defense.
