SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. --  Shepherd University director of athletics Karl Wolf announced today that Dave Trail has resigned as head softball coach at Shepherd. Wolf further stated that Coach Trail will be missed and acknowledged the success and growth of Shepherd softball during Trail's tenure. Trail has decided to pursue other interests.

Trail posted a 114-108 (.514) record over his five-year career at Shepherd. He passed Shepherd Hall of Famer Dave Cole (109 wins) this year as the program's all-time winningest coach. This season Trail led the Rams to a record-setting 31-19 mark and their first-ever NCAA II regional appearance. Shepherd recorded a perfect 5-0 tourney record en route to capturing the WVIAC Tournament title and a bid to the regionals.

Shepherd registered 20 wins or more for the past four seasons under Trail. His 2004 team went 24-22 with a 16-7 record in WVIAC play. The 16 conference wins set a new school record.  Trail's 2005 team (26-16) tied a then school record with 26 victories and became the first Ram team to gain a ranking in the NCAA II Regional Softball Polls with a ninth place ranking in the Great Lakes Regional poll for a two-week period in April.

Trail, a 1978 graduate of Shepherd, was a standout softball pitcher in the area and was inducted into the Greater Washington Fastpitch Softball Hall of Fame in October 2004. Trail amassed a career pitching mark of 600-181 (.768) with 31 no-hitters and five perfect games. Trail was a member of the West Virginia ASA/ISC State Champions for 11 years. He was a team member of the Virginia State Champions for four years, the West Virginia State Champions for three years, and the Metropolitan D.C. Champions for two years.
