GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- Dwayne Thompson completed 16-of-20 passes for 213 yards and a touchdown and Jerry Seymour rushed 24 times for 170 yards and a score to lead Glenville State to a 24-13 win over 10th-ranked Shepherd University in WVIAC football action at Ike and Sue Morris Stadium last Saturday. The loss snapped a 30-game regular season winning streak and a 23-game conference win streak for the Rams.
Glenville State took a 7-0 lead with 12:35 left in the first quarter when Thompson scored on a one-yard plunge.
Seymour raced 53 yards for a score with 1:25 remaining in the first quarter to give the Pioneers a 14-0 advantage.
Shepherd cut the lead to 14-7 when senior running back Dervon Wallace (Lusby, MD/Calvert) scored on an eight-yard jaunt with 14:54 left in the second quarter.
Alex Amick nailed a 36-yard field goal and Thompson teamed with Donald Brown on a nine-yard scoring pass in the final minutes of half to give the Pioneers a 24-7 lead going into the intermission.
The Pioneers took advantage of two Ram turnovers and amassed an impressive 303 yards of total offense in the first half with Thompson hitting on 11-of-14 passes for 154 yards and Seymour carrying 10 times for 124 yards.
Wallace scored on three-yard run with 4:47 left in the third quarter to cap a 13-play, 64-yard drive and cut the lead to 24-13. The extra point attempt by freshman David Canada (Frederick, MD/ Frederick) failed after a mishandled snap.
The Rams threatened to score late in the fourth quarter and they drove to the Glenville State 17-yard line before the drive stalled and the Pioneers held on fourth down.
Wallace rushed 23 times for 138 yards for the Rams.
Junior quarterback Tyler Lazear (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) completed 9-of-21 passes for 90 yards.
Senior wide receiver Mark Springirth (Germantown, MD/Watkins Mill) led the Ram receivers with four receptions for 56 yards. Springirth (1,053 career yards) became the 15th player on program history to record 1,000 receiving yards or more.
The Ram defense was led by senior strong safety Jerome Quinata (Woodbridge, VA/Hylton) with 10 tackles, including a game-high six solo stops.
Sophomore free safety Layton Hersh (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key) and junior defensive lineman Mike Heatwole (Falls Church, VA/McLean/Fork Union) each added nine tackles, while senior cornerback Ayo Ijelu (Germantown, MD/Northwest) contributed eight.
Freshman punter Zach Beach (Clarksburg, MD/Urbana) punted four times for a 35.8 average. He had two punts inside the 20-yard line.
