Shepherd Takes Down Fairmont

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Senior running back Dervon Wallace (Lusby, MD/ Calvert) rushed 32 times for 131 yards and three touchdowns to lead 21st-ranked Shepherd University to a 31-10 win over Fairmont State University in WVIAC football action at Duvall-Rosier Field last Saturday. 

Shepherd took a 6-0 lead with 5:41 left in the first quarter when Wallace scored on a one-yard plunge. The extra point by freshman kicker David Canada (Frederick, MD/Frederick) was unsuccessful.

Alex Ashley nailed a 38-yard field goal for the Falcons with 9:44 left in the second quarter to cut the Shepherd lead to 6-3.

The Rams took a 13-3 advantage in to halftime when Wallace scored on an eight-yard scamper with 2:11 left in the half. Junior Bryan Beverage (Romney, WV/Hampshire) added the extra point.

Shepherd extended its lead to 15-3 when an errant snap on a Fairmont punt was recovered in the end zone by Falcon punter Ben Landis for a safety with 13:54 left in the third quarter.

Wallace scored on a two-yard run with 2:56 remaining in the third quarter to give the Rams a 22-3 lead.

Sophomore Layton Hersh (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key) blocked a Landis punt and Landis recovered in the end zone for a safety to extend the Ram lead to 24-3 with 12:21 left in the fourth quarter. 

Derek Taylor teamed with Stephon Johnson on a three-yard scoring pass with 2:21 left in the game to cut the lead to 24-10.

Senior outside linebacker Joey Hooks (Montgomery Village, MD/Watkins Mill) picked off a Taylor pass and raced 25 yards for a score with 55 seconds remaining in the game to complete the scoring.

Junior quarterback Tyler Lazear (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) completed 12-of-21 passes for 105 yards. Derek Taylor was 11-of-25 for 117 yards with three interceptions for the Falcons. 

The Shepherd defense was led by junior linebacker Louis Corum (Manassas, VA/Westfield) with six tackles, including five solo stops.

Redshirt-freshman linebacker Brian Taylor (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach) and junior defensive lineman Frank Herrera (Burke, VA/Robinson) each added five tackles. Herrera also had three tackles-for-loss and a 13-yard interception return.

Freshman Zach Beach (Clarksburg, MD/Urbana) punted five times for a 33.4 average with three inside the 20-yard line.

Freshman Deante Steele (Woodbridge, VA/Potomac) gave the Shepherd return game a boost with four kickoffs returns for 87 yards and a punt return for 36 yards.
