Shepherd Defeats Seton Hill, 44-6

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Senior running back Dervon Wallace (Lusby, MD/Calvert) rushed 28 times for 148 yards and a touchdown to help lead 22nd-ranked Shepherd University to a 44-6 win over Seton Hill University in WVIAC football action at Ram Stadium last Saturday. 

Wallace earned WVIAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors for his stellar play.

Shepherd took a 7-0 lead with 13:58 left in the first quarter when Wallace scored on a two-yard plunge. The score was setup by an interception by junior linebacker Louis Corum (Manassas, VA/Westfield). 

Seton Hill answered back at the 14:46 mark of the second quarter when Matt Dowdell teamed with Samuel Tranks on a 17-yard scoring strike.  After a mishandled snap, a two-point pass attempt fell incomplete as Shepherd held a 7-6 lead. 

Minutes later redshirt-freshman Bobby Humphries (Frederick, MD/Thomas Johnson) scored on a one-yard run to up the lead to 14-6. 

The Rams added a pair of touchdowns late in the half to take a 28-6 lead into intermission. 

Junior quarterback Tyler Lazear (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) teamed with redshirt-freshman wide receiver Raymond Mends (Leesburg, VA/Park View) on a 37-yard scoring play and later scored on a one-yard sneak. 

Junior kicker Bryan Beverage (Romney, WV/Hampshire) drilled a 19-yard field goal with 10:23 left in the third quarter to up the Ram lead to 31-6. 

Senior defensive back Jerome Quinata (Woodbridge, VA/C.D. Hylton) picked off a Dowdell pass and scampered 89 yards with 7:41 left in the third quarter for a score to give the Rams a 37-6 advantage. 

Shepherd completed the scoring with 4:45 left in the fourth quarter when sophomore quarterback Brett Zirkle (Stuarts Draft, VA/Stuarts Draft) connected on a nine-yard scoring strike with freshman wide receiver Nikkolai Norrell (Richmond, VA/Hermitage). 

Lazear completed 14-of-23 passes for 194 yards for the Rams, while Zirkle was 5-of-7 for 47 yards. 

Dowdell was 11-of-29 for 121 yards with four interceptions for the Griffins. 

Jeff Jones rushed seven times for 56 yards and Antwarn Jones added eight carries for 47 yards. 

Junior defensive back Dustin Smith (Germantown, MD/Northwest) and Corum led the Rams with six tackles each. Senior outside linebacker Joey Hooks (Montgomery Village, MD/Watkins Mill) and junior defensive back Taros Harris (Chesapeake Beach, MD/Calvert) also recorded interceptions for the Rams.
