SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Junior running back Kenny Williams (Elgin, Ill./Eastern Illinois) rushed 20 times for 57 yards and a pair of scores and senior quarterback Bobby Cooper (Davidsonville, Md./South River) completed 15-of-26 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown to lead Shepherd University to a 34-7 win over American International in football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday. The game endured a 46-minute lightning/rain delay.
American International took a 7-0 lead when Kevin Arduino teamed with Maurice Easterling on a 52-yard scoring pass with 10:47 left in the first quarter.
Shepherd tied the game on a one-yard plunge by Williams with 6:39 left in the first quarter. Freshman kicker
Ryan Earls (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) added the extra point.
Williams scored on a 12-yard run with 5:13 left in the second quarter to give the Rams a 14-7 advantage.
Shepherd took a 21-7 lead into the break as junior running back Michael Haynes (Midlothian, Va./Cloverhill) scored on a one-yard run with 1:25 left in the half.
The Rams added a pair of second half scores as Cooper connected on a 16-yard scoring strike to freshman wide receiver
Billy Brown (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) in the third quarter and Haynes rushed for a one-yard score in the fourth quarter.
Cooper completed 15-of-26 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown. Arduino completed 14-of-27 passes for 211 yards and a score.
Terrell Williams had 15 carries for a game-high 89 yards to pace the Yellow Jackets.
Sophomore wide receiver
William McKenzie (Upper Marlboro, Md./Frederick Douglass) had five catches for 33 yards to lead the Shepherd receivers. Easterling had four receptions for 98 yards to pace AIC.
Shepherd had 292 yards of total offense, while American International totaled 310 yards.
Junior linebacker
Dominique Dixon (Westover, W.Va./University) and senior linebacker A.J. Parrish (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst County) each recorded seven tackles and a forced fumble to lead the Shepherd defense. Sophomore outside linebacker
De'Ontre Johnson (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dr. Henry A. Wise) added six stops. Jacquawne Simpkins had a game-high 11 stops for the Yellow Jackets. Markell Rice added 10 tackles.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Seton Hill for a noon contest.
