SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Junior guard Austin Cunningham (Vincent, Ohio/Ohio Valley) scored 27 points and senior guard Brantley Osborne (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) added 25 to lead Shepherd University to a 98-78 win over Glenville State in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.
Cunningham hit on 7-of-13 field goals with a 13-of-15 effort from the foul line. He also had seven boards and four assists. Osborne hit on 9-of-16 field goals with a 4-of-8 effort from three-point range and a 3-of-3 effort at the charity stripe. He added eight rebounds and five assists.
Freshman Naim Muhammad (Waldorf, Md./North Point) fired in 20 points and had a game-high four steals to go along with five boards.
Senior forward Kevin Jones (Washington, D.C./IUP) added 11 points, while senior guard Marcus Pilgrim (Mitchellville, Md./Bishop McNamara) contributed eight points and five assists.
Lamar Mallory had 21 points and eight rebounds to lead the Pioneers. Reggie Williams added 15 points.
Shepherd shot 56.5 percent (35-62) from the floor with a 35 percent (7-20) effort from three-point range. The Rams hit on 21-of-26 free throws (80.8 percent).
Glenville State shot 47.5 percent (28-59) from the floor with a 6-of-24 effort (25 percent) from beyond the arc. The Pioneers hit on 16-of-24 free throws (66.7 percent).
Shepherd had a 36-28 advantage on the boards. The Rams forced 22 turnovers, while committing 18.
The Rams used a 22-7 run midway through the second half to take control and open up a 17-point lead at 71-54 with 8:36 remaining. Cunningham had 11 points during the run.
Shepherd improves to 4-1, 1-0 in MEC play, while Glenville State falls to 2-1, 0-1. The Rams return to action on Monday when they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 7:30 p.m. game.
