Redshirt-freshman guard Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) scored a game-high 18 points to lead six Rams in double figures as Shepherd University handed West Virginia Wesleyan a 96-55 setback in MEC women's basketball action at the West Virginia Wesleyan on Monday. The win gave Shepherd head coach Toni West her first victory as coach of the Rams.
Brittany Williams led Wesleyan with 14 points.
Shepherd shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half and limited the Bobcats to a 17.9 percent shooting effort to take a 43-20 lead into the break.
The Rams shot 50 percent (37-74) from the floor for the game, 29.2 percent (7-24) from three-point range, and 60 percent (15-25) from the line.
The Lady Bobcats hit at 22.4 percent (15-67) from the floor, 0 percent (0-11) from beyond the arc, and 80.6 percent (25-31) from the charity stripe.
Shepherd had a 50-46 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 24 turnovers and committed 19.
Shepherd improves to 1-4, 1-1 in MEC play, while West Virginia Wesleyan falls to 1-3, 0-2. The Rams return to action on Dec. 2 when they host Indiana (Pa.) for a 7 p.m. contest.
