SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University limited West Virginia State to only 77 yards of total offense, including just 17 rushing yards, en route to a 47-0 victory in MEC football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.
Shepherd took a 7-0 lead when sophomore running back Allen Cross (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) scored on a five-yard run with 8:04 left in the first quarter.
The Rams increased their lead to 14-0 when redshirt-freshman Jabre Lolley (Wilmington, Del./St. Marks) scored on a five-yard scamper minutes later.
Sophomore kicker Ryan Earls (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) connected on field goals of 21 and 46 yards in the second quarter to give the Rams a 20-0 lead at the break.
Redshirt-freshman quarterback Jeff Ziemba (Newark,Del./St. Marks) teamed with junior wide receiver William McKenzie (Upper Marlboro, Md./Frederick Douglass) on a 25-yard scoring strike to up the Shepherd lead to 27-0 with 7:09 left in the third quarter.
Lolley scored on a three-yard plunge with 13:05 left in the fourth quarter to give the Rams a 34-0.
Ziemba connected on 17-of-30 passes for 183 yards for the Rams. Tyler Searls completed 11-of-20 passes for 50 yards for the Yellow Jackets.
McKenzie led the Ram receivers with six catches for 97 yards. Shanin Bennefield had three receptions for 18 yards to pace West Virginia State.
Cross rushed for 65 yards on 18 carries, while Lolley added 13 carries for 63 yard to lead the Rams. Josh Wade had nine carries for 15 yards for State.
Shepherd gained 409 yards of total offense, with 117 coming on the ground.
Notes: Howard Jones (33 career sacks) needs just one sack to break the Shepherd all-time mark set by Greg Stup (33.5, 1992-96) The 46-yard field goal by Earls in a career long.
