Shepherd Women Fall at WV State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Lexy Carson scored 27 points and handed out nine assists to lead West Virginia State to a 114-92 win over Shepherd University in MEC women's basketball action at West Virginia State on Thursday night.
Shealyn Shafer added 13 points and grabbed 15 boards for the Yellow Jackets.
Junior guard Rachel Johnson (Frederick, Md./Frederick) led the Rams with 19 points, five assists, and three steals. Junior center Gabby Flinchum (North Potomac, Md./Wootton) added 18 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocked shots.
Redshirt-freshman guard Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana), junior guard Briana Vaden (Stockton, Calif./San Joaquin Delta College), and senior forward Jimyse Brown (Rankin, Pa./Winchester Thurston) each tossed 13 points. Mason added a game-high five steals.
The Rams shot 36.6 percent (30-82) from the floor for the game, 16.7 percent (3-18) from three-point range, and 72.5 percent (29-40) from the line.
State hit at 52.7 percent (39-74) from the floor, 45.5 percent (10-22) from beyond the arc, and 59.1 percent (26-44) from the charity stripe.
The Yellow Jackets had a 63-42 edge in rebounding.
Shepherd falls to 1-6, 1-2 in MEC action, while West Virginia State improves to 5-2, 2-1. The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host University of Charleston for a 2 p.m. contest.
