Shepherd Men Post Sixth Straight Win with 87-72 Win over Charleston

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior guard Brantley Osborne (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) scored a game-high 22 points, while junior guard Austin Cunningham (Vincent, Ohio/Ohio Valley) and senior forward Kevin Jones (Washington, DC/IUP) each added 16 to lead Shepherd University to an 87-72 win over University of Charleston in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Sunday.
Osborne hit on 9-of-15 field goals with a 4-of-7 effort from three-point range. He added eight rebounds and four assists. Jones was 6-of-10 from the floor, while Cunningham connected on 5-of-10 field goals. Cunningham also handed out a game-high seven assists.
Senior guard Marcus Pilgrim (Mitchellville, Md./Bishop McNamara) tossed in 15 points. Junior forward Morgan McDonald (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman) recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Denzel Douglas had 15 points and seven rebounds to lead Charleston. Xavier Humphrey added 11 points and eight boards.
Shepherd shot 50 percent (31-62) from the floor with a 45.5 percent (10-22) effort from three-point range. The Rams hit on 20-of-26 free throws (76.9 percent).
Charleston shot 45.5 percent (25-55) from the floor with a 2-of-12 effort (16.7 percent) from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles drained 15-of-20 free throws (75 percent).
Shepherd had a 37-30 edge on the boards. The Rams forced 17 turnovers, while committing 16.
Shepherd closed out the first half with a 17-9 run to take a 43-29 lead into the break.
The Rams controlled the second half as they led by as many as 30 points and maintained a double-digit lead throughout.
Shepherd improves to 7-1, 4-0 in MEC play, while Charleston falls to 5-2, 2-2. The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to face Gannon for a 7:30 game at the Porreco Cup.
