SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. –
Senior guard Brantley Osborne (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) scored 20 of his game-high 21 points in the second half to lift Shepherd to an 88-76 win over UVa-Wise in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.
Osborne connected on 6-of-11 shots with a 4-of-5 effort from beyond the arc. He was 5-for-5 from the foul line.
Javon Moore scored 18 points to lead the Cavaliers. Deon Boyce added 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Charles George had 13 points.
Shepherd shot 49.1 percent (28-57) from the floor with a 55 percent (11-20) effort from three-point range. The Rams connected on 21-of-24 free throws (87.5 percent).
UVa-Wise shot 42.9 percent (30-70) from the floor with a 10-of-29 effort (34.5 percent) from beyond the arc. The Cavaliers hit on 6-of-14 free throws (42.9 percent).
UVa-Wise had a 37-36 edge on the boards. The Rams forced 15 turnovers and committed 15.
The Cavaliers took a 41-28 lead into the break as Boyce (10) and Tyler Maggard (9) combined for 19 first half points.
Shepherd erased a 13-point second half deficit and took the lead for good at 55-54 on a layup by senior forward Kevin Jones (Washington, DC/IUP) with 8:50 remaining.
Minutes later, Shepherd used a 12-2 run – fueled by four consecutive three-pointers – to open up an 11-point lead to take control. Osborne had two treys, while Pilgrim and Cunningham each had one during the run.
Shepherd shot 63 percent (17-27) from the floor, 80 percent (8-10) from three-point range, and 90 percent (18-20) in the second half.
Shepherd improves to 11-3, 6-2 in conference action, while UVa-Wise falls to 6-6, 3-5. The Rams return to action on Monday when they host Concord for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
