SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Fairmont State outscored Shepherd University 11-6 in the overtime period to gain a 90-85 win in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Thursday.
Stevie Browning scored a game-high 26 points to pace the Falcons. Brendan Cooper added 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while Martins Abele had 12 points and 10 boards.
Shepherd shot 40.3 percent (25-62) from the floor with a 34.8 percent (8-23) effort from three-point range. The Rams connected on 27-of-36 free throws (75 percent).
Fairmont State shot 48.4 percent (31-64) from the floor with a 4-of-8 effort (50 percent) from beyond the arc. The Falcons hit on 24-of-37 free throws (64.9 percent).
Fairmont Statehad a 50-26 advantage on the boards. The Rams forced 13 turnovers and committed 21.
Shepherd took a 45-31 lead into the break as Pilgrim (13) and Jones (11) combined for 24 points in the first half.
Shepherd used a 10-0 run early in the second half to take a nine-point lead at 73-64 after a Muhammad layup with 11:56 left.
The Rams held a six-point lead at 79-73 after a pair of free throws by McDonald with 3:29 remaining in regulation. McDonald fouled out seconds later and the Falcons closed on a 6-0 run to force the extra session.
Chase Morgan scored five points in overtime to lead the Falcons to victory.
Shepherd falls to 13-4, 8-3 in conference action, while Fairmont State improves to 11-5, 6-4. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host West Virginia State at 4 p.m.
