Shepherd Volleyball Rallies Past West Liberty

Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University rallied past West Liberty for a 3-1 triumph in MEC volleyball action at the Butcher Center on Senior Night on Thursday.  The Rams recorded a 23-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-21 victory.

Freshman right side/setter Kayleigh Helgesen (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino) had 18 kills and senior opposite/outside hitter Valerie Bour (Willoughby Hills, Ohio/Willoughby South) added 16 kills and 11 digs to lead the Rams.

Senior middle hitter Kayla Motheral (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) recorded 11 kills with a .474 attack percentage, while senior middle hitter Katie Beecher (Concord, NC./Concord/Liberty) had seven kills and a .400 attack percentage. Motheral added a match-high four blocks.

Senior outside hitter Lauren Wilkins (Winchester, Va./Sherando) and freshman libero/defensive specialist Kelsey Anderson (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) each had 12 digs, while senior setter Taylor Belella (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) recorded 56 assists and 11 digs.

Chelsea Bertle had 15 kills to pace the Hilltoppers.

Shepherd improves to 17-11, 10-5 in MEC action, while West Liberty falls to 11-18, 7-9. The Rams close out regular season play on Friday when they host 10th-ranked Wheeling Jesuit for a 7 p.m. match.

Notes: Seniors Katie Beecher, Taylor Belella, Valerie Bour, Kayla Motheral, and Lauren Wilkins were honored for their contributions to the Shepherd volleyball program in a pre-game ceremony. The Rams improved to 9-2 at home this season.
