Shepherd Women Knock Off Charleston

Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Senior guard Alex Weakland (Camp Hill, Pa./Cumberland Valley) scored a game-high 18 points, while sophomore forward Liz Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York)  and sophomore guard Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) each scored 15 to lead Shepherd University to an 80-76 win over University of Charleston in MEC women's basketball action at Charleston on Saturday.

Weakland connected on 6-of-8 field goals with a 3-of-4 effort from three-point range. She hit on 3-of-5 free throws. She also added six rebounds.

Myers hit on 7-of-11 field goals with a 1-of-1 effort at the charity stripe, while Mason connected on 7-of-12 shots from the floor with a 1-of-2 effort at the foul line. She handed out a game and career-high nine assists.

Freshman guard Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) was also in double figures with 10 points. Senior guard Rachel Johnson (Frederick, Md./Frederick) added nine points and
four steals.

Kayla Dozier had 16 points and LeAnne Ross added 13 to lead Charleston. Kiara Johnson had 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

Shepherd rallied from a 43 -41 halftime deficit and took the lead for good at 69-67 on a pair of free throws by Arden with 5:22 remaining. The Rams outscored Charleston 11-9 down the stretch to seal the win.

Shepherd shot 46.4 percent (32-69) from the floor with a 50 percent effort (6-12) from three-point range. The Rams shot 65 percent (10-16) from the charity stripe.

Charleston connected on 39.7 percent (25-63) from the floor with a 37.5 percent (6-16) performance from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles hit on 76.9 percent (20-26) of their free throws.

UC had a 48-34 advantage on the boards. The Rams forced 18 turnovers and committed 11.

Shepherd improves to 6-2 overall, 4-0 in conference play, while Charleston drops to 5-2, 2-2. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Shippensburg for a 2 p.m. contest.
