Osborne Leads Shepherd Men Past Wheeling Jesuit

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. Senior guard Brantley Osborne (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) fired in a game-high 31 points and tied a school record with nine three-pointers to lead Shepherd University to a 75-71 win over Wheeling Jesuit in MEC men's basketball action on Senior Day at the Butcher Center on Saturday.
Osborne was 11-20 from the floor with a 9-of-14 performance from beyond the arc. He added three assists and two rebounds.
Junior forward Morgan McDonald (Inwood, WV/Musselman) had 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while junior guard Austin Cunningham (Vincent, Ohio/wOhio Valley) had 10 points, a game-high eight assists, and six boards.
Senior guard Marcus Pilgrim (Mitchellville, Md./Bishop McNamara) had nine points and senior forward Kevin Jones (Washington, DC/Bishop O'Connell/IUP) tossed in six.
Eric Siefert had 22 points, nine rebounds, and five assists to pace the Cardinals. Tim Goff had 17 points and seven boards, while Justin Fritts and Kyle Ritz each had 10 points.
Shepherd had a 44-31 lead at the break as Osborne poured in 23 first half points.
The Cardinals erased a 10-point deficit with a 14-0 run midway through the second half and took a 66-62 lead after a layup by Ritz with 4:41 left. Goff had five points to lead the run.
The Rams took the lead for good at 72-71 on a layup by Cunningham with 1:03 remaining. Cunningham drained 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Shepherd shot 46.6 percent (27-58) from the floor with a 42.9 percent (12-28) effort from three-point range. The Rams connected on 9-of-12 free throws (75 percent).
Wheeling Jesuit shot 47.4 percent (27-57) from the floor with a 10-of-31 effort (32.3 percent) from beyond the arc. The Cardinals hit on 7-of-13 free throws (53.8 percent).
Wheeling Jesuit had a 34-19 edge on the boards. The Rams forced nine turnovers and committed 11.
Shepherd improves to 17-7, 12-6 in conference action, while Wheeling Jesuit falls to 14-9, 11-8. The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to UVa-Wise for a 7:30 p.m. game.
Notes: Osborne tied the school record (and Butcher Center record) for three-pointers that he tied last season against Wheeling Jesuit on Jan. 14, 2013. Chad Myers set the record with nine treys on the road against West Liberty on Jan. 9, 2006. Shepherd's win ended an eight-game winning streak for the Cardinals. Shepherd's 17 wins are the most since the 2003-04 team finished at 17-11.
