UVa-Wise Downs Shepherd Women

WISE, Va. – Taylor Sandidge had 17 points and Makenzie Cluesman added 15 to lead UVa-Wise to an 81-68 win over Shepherd University in MEC women's basketball action at UVa-Wise on Thursday.
Cluesman also grabbed a team-high eight boards and five assists, while Sandidge and Kayla Carey each grabbed seven rebounds.
Freshman forward Liz Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) led the Rams with a career-high 15 points. Myers was 7-of-10 from the floor with a 1-of-3 effort from the foul line.
Senior forward Jimyse Brown (Rankin, Pa./Winchester Thurston) added 11 points and 11 rebounds, while redshirt-freshman forward Hailey Brown (Annandale, Va./Annandale) posted her second career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Junior guard Alex Weakland (Camp Hill, Pa./Cumberland Valley) contributed nine points and tied Cluesman with a game-high five assists. Junior center Gabby Flinchum (North Potomac, Md./Wootton) recorded a game-high six blocked shots.
Katie Jo Lester and Reynesha Archer each added 13 points for the Cavaliers.
UVa-Wise had a 45-35 lead at the break.
The Rams shot 35.2 percent (25-71) from the floor for the game, 20 percent (3-15) from three-point range, and 71.4 percent (15-21) from the line.
UVa-Wise connected at 54.2 percent (32-59) from the floor, 27.3 percent (3-11) from beyond the arc, and 76.5 percent (26-34) from the charity stripe.
The Cavaliers had a 49-42 advantage in rebounds. The Rams forced 23 turnovers and committed 21.
Shepherd falls to 2-21, 2-17 in MEC action, while UVa-Wise improves to 9-14, 5-14. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Concord for a 2 p.m. contest.
