Shepherd Men Defeat Concord

Box Score ATHENS, W.Va. – Freshman guard Naim Muhammad (Waldorf, Md./North Point) scored a career-high 21 points and junior guard Austin Cunningham (Vincent, Ohio/Warren Local/Ohio Valley) added 18 to lead Shepherd University to an 89-75 win over Concord in MEC men's basketball action at Concord on Saturday.

Muhammad was 9-of-14 from the floor with a 3-of-4 outing at the foul line. Cunningham was 6-of-12 from the floor with a 2-of-5 performance from beyond the arc with a 4-of-6 effort at the foul line. He added a game-high seven assists and tied Muhammad with a game-high three steals.

Senior guard Brantley Osborne (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) tossed in 16 points and handed out three assists, while junior forward Morgan McDonald (Inwood, WV/Musselman) chipped in with 10 points and nine boards.

Senior guard Marcus Pilgrim (Mitchellville, Md./Bishop McNamara) had 12 points and three assists and senior forward Kevin Jones (Washington, DC/Bishop O'Connell/IUP) tied McDonald for team-high rebounding honors with nine.

Terry Hopewell had 23 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Mountain Lions. Mike Boyd added 11 points and five assists.
Shepherd had a 35-25 lead at the break as five Rams had five points or more in the first half.

After Concord cut the Shepherd lead to nine points and 68-59 on a three-pointer by Jalen Camper with 6:28 remaining, the Rams went on a 10-3 run to take control of the contest with a 16-point advantage.

Shepherd shot 58.9 percent (33-56) from the floor with a 44.4 percent (8-18) effort from three-point range. The Rams hit on 15-of-21 free throws (71.4 percent).

Concord shot 46 percent (29-63) from the floor with a 6-of-20 effort (30 percent) from beyond the arc. The Mountain Lions drained 11-of-17 free throws (64.7 percent).

Concord had a 38-25 advantage on the boards. The Rams forced 14 turnovers and committed just six.

Shepherd improves to 19-7, 14-6 in conference action, while Concord drops to 8-17, 5-14. The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host West Virginia Wesleyan at 7:30 p.m.
