Shepherd Men Fall to Wesleyan

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Ray Warren scored 20 points and Tanner McGrew added 18 to lead West Virginia Wesleyan to an 80-68 win over Shepherd University in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Wednesday night.
Freshman guard Naim Muhammad (Waldorf, Md./North Point) scored a game and career-high 23 points to pace the Rams. He was 10-of-15 from the floor with a 3-of-3 effort from the line. He added a team-high three steals.
Junior forward Morgan McDonald (Inwood, WV/Musselman) had 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to post his 12th double-double of the season. He also had four assists, three blocks, and three steals.
Junior guard Austin Cunningham (Vincent, Ohio/Ohio Valley) scored 12 points, while senior guard Brantley Osborne (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) had seven points and six assists.
T.J. Thompson had 13 points for the Bobcats. Garrett Grantham contributed eight points and tied Osborne for game-high assists honors with six.
Shepherd had a 38-37 lead at the break.
The game featured 16 lead changes and 10 ties. The Bobcats took the lead for good at 55-53 on a layup by Warren with 12:12 remaining.
Shepherd shot 42.9 percent (24-56) from the floor with a 23.8 percent (5-21) effort from three-point range. The Rams hit on 15-of-18 free throws (83.3 percent).
West Virginia Wesleyan shot 60.9 percent (28-46) from the floor with an 8-of-15 effort (53.3 percent) from beyond the arc. The Bobcats drained 16-of-23 free throws (69.6 percent).
West Virginia Wesleyan had a 28-27 edge on the boards. The Rams forced 11 turnovers and committed 11.
Shepherd falls to 19-8, 14-7 in conference action, while West Virginia Wesleyan to 19-10, 14-7. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Fairmont State for a 4 p.m. game.
