SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Junior center Gabby Flinchum (North Potomac, MD/Wootton) scored a game-high 28 points to lead Shepherd University to an 86-66 win in MEC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Wednesday night. Flinchum's 28-point effort gives her 1,000 points for her career.
Flinchum connected on 11-of-16 field goals and was 6-of-10 from the foul line. She added six rebounds and three blocked shots. She tied her career-high with the 28-point performance.
Junior guard Rachel Johnson (Frederick, MD/Frederick) added 21 points and handed out a team-high four assists. She hit on 9-of-13 shots from the floor with a 3-of-4 effort from beyond the arc.
Redshirt-freshman guard Cara Mason (Monrovia, MD/Urbana) tossed in 13 points, while senior forward Jimyse Brown (Rankin, Pa./Winchester Thurston) had nine points, nine rebounds and three steals.
Kiki DeVane had 20 points and eight boards to lead the Bobcats. Brittany Williams added 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Shepherd had a 44-29 lead at the break as Flinchum (10) and Johnson (9) teamed for 20 points in the first half.
Flinchum poured in 18 second half points to reach 1,000 points. She reached the mark with just eight seconds left in the game as she scored a layup on an assist from Johnson.
The Rams shot 54.7 percent (35-64) from the floor for the game, 46.2 percent (6-13) from three-point range, and 71.4 percent (10-14) from the line.
West Virginia Wesleyan connected at 39.3 percent (24-61) from the floor, 33.3 percent (2-6) from beyond the arc, and 59.3 percent (18-22) from the charity stripe. A
Shepherd had a 41-34 advantage in rebounds. The Rams forced 18 turnovers and committed 20.
Shepherd improves to 4-21, 4-17 in MEC action, while West Virginia Wesleyan drops to 2-23, 0-21. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to for a 2 p.m. contest.
