Junior forward Morgan McDonald (Inwood, W.Va/Musselman) had 18 points and 12 rebounds and junior guard Austin Cunningham (Vincent, Ohio/Ohio Valley) added 16 points and a game-high seven assists to lead Shepherd University to a 72-57 win over Urbana University in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.
McDonald hit on 7-of-12 shots from the floor with a 4-of-4 effort from the foul line. His double-double was his 10th on the season.
Cunningham was 6-off-11 from the floor with a 2-of-5 effort from beyond the arc. He was 2-for-2 from the charity stripe.
Dusan Komljenovic scored a game-high 27 points to pace the Blue Knights. Mike Newton added 10 points, while Ognjen Rebic grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
Shepherd took a 36-22 lead into the break behind 13 first half points from Cunningham.
The Rams went on an 11-0 run midway through the second half to take a 20-point lead at 56-36 with 9:54 remaining to put the game out of reach.
Shepherd shot 50.9 percent (28-55) from the floor with a 26.3 percent (5-19) effort from three-point range. The Rams connected on 11-of-16 free throws (68.8 percent).
Urbana shot 35.6 percent (21-59) from the floor with a 6-of-19 effort (31.6 percent) from beyond the arc. The Blue Knights hit on 9-of-12 free throws (75 percent).
Shepherd had a 37-33 edge on the boards. The Rams forced 18 turnovers and committed 16.
Shepherd improves to 16-6, 11-5 in conference action, while Urbana drops to 0-21, 0-17. The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to West Liberty for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
