SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Junior center Gabby Flinchum (North Potomac, MD/Wootton) had a career-high 28 points and tied a career-high with 14 rebounds, but Urbana rallied past Shepherd University for an 86-81 win in MEC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.
Flinchum hit on 11-of-20 shots from the floor with a 6-of-9 effort from the foul line. She also had two assists, two steals, and a blocked shot.
DeVonyea Johnson scored 23 points and Lexie Taylor added 18 for the Blue Knights. Katy Barkley added 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds
Shepherd took a 46-41 lead into the break behind 14 first half points from Flinchum.
Urbana took the lead for good at 72-71 after a jumper by Johnson with 5:16 remaining. Shepherd trailed by only two points at 80-78 after a three-pointer by McLoughlin with 1:57 left, but Urbana finished the game on a 6-3 run to seal the win.
The Rams shot 42.1 percent (32-76) from the floor for the game, 35.7 percent (5-14) from three-point range, and 63.2 percent (12-19) from the line.
Urbana connected at 48.5 percent (32-66) from the floor, 35.3 percent (6-17) from beyond the arc, and 69.6 percent (16-23) from the charity stripe.
Shepherd had a 45-38 edge in rebounds. The Rams forced 17 turnovers and committed 17.
Shepherd falls to 2-18, 2-14 in MEC action, while Urbana improves to 15-6, 12-5. The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to face West Liberty for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
