Shepherd Baseball Sweeps UVa-Wise

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WISE, Va. – Shepherd University swept UVa-Wise in MEC baseball action at UVa-Wise on Saturday. The Rams gained a 7-0 win in game one and added 1-0 triumph in the nightcap.

Junior second baseman Bryce Shemer (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill/Colorado Mesa) singled home freshman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) in the fifthinning in game one to break a scoreless tie.

Carney added a three-run double in the sixth to help the Rams take control of the contest.

Senior designated hitter Ryan Messina (St. James, NY/Smithtown East/Tampa) went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.
Bill Steven went 2-for-3 for Wise.

Senior pitcher Paul Hvozdovic (Herndon, Va./Herndon) (6.0 IP, 2 H, 6 Ks, 1 BB) picked up his first win of the year to improve to 1-0. Wise starter Caleb Daniels (0-3) took the loss.

Senior outfielder Kyle Porter (Baltimore, MD/Good Counsel/CCBC) scored the game's only run in the third inning in the nightcap.

He reached on a walk and moves to second when senior outfielder Michael Lott (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) was thrown out on a double steal attempt. Porter moved to third on a fly out and scored on a wild pitch.

Shemer went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.

Chaz Tanner had a pair of hits for the Cavalier.

Sophomore pitcher Ryan Pansch (Charles Town, WV) (6.0 IP, 5H, 9 Ks, 0 BB) (1-1) gained the win, while sophomore reliever Sam Crater (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York/Frederick CC) (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB) picked up the save. Alan Javins (0-1) took the loss.

Shepherd improves to 4-3, 2-0 in conference play, while UVa-Wise falls to 1-5, 0-2. The two teams return to action on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
