SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University and Concord split MEC baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. The Rams earned a 3-1 win in game one, while the Mountain Lions gained a 6-5 victory in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the second inning in game one as freshman second baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) singled, stole second, and scored on a single by senior first baseman Brandon Coffey (Manassas, Va./Osbourn).
The Mountain Lions tied the game in the fifth as Brad Sullivan singled and later scored on a single by Andrew Seigel.
Shepherd plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the win. Junior second baseman Bryce Shemer (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill/Colorado Mesa) walked and later scored on a double off the bat of senior outfielder Michael Lott (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge). Senior outfielder Kyle Porter (Baltimore, Md./Good Counsel/CCBC) followed with a triple to score Lott.
Senior pitcher Paul Hvozdovic (Herndon, Va./Herndon) (7.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 4Ks, 1 BB) (3-0) picked up a complete game win for the Rams. Ryan Weatherholtz (6.0 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 Ks, 4 BB) (3-1) took the loss for the Mountain Lions.
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the nightcap on a two-run double by senior designated hitter Ryan Messina (St. James, NY/Smithtown East/Tampa) in the first.
Concord rallied to take a 5-2 lead with five runs in the second. The Mountain Lions took advantage of three hits and two errors. Joey Miller hit a two-run single to key the rally.
Shepherd added a run in the third as junior outfielder Matt Wilson (Baltimore, Md./ Archbishop Curley/Essex CC) was hit-by-pitch and later scored on a ground out by Shemer.
Wilson added a solo homer in the fourth to cut the lead to 5-4.
Concord extended its lead to 6-4 on a solo blast by Miller in the fifth.
The Rams added a run in the seventh as junior catcher Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown/USC Aiken) doubled and later scored on an RBI-single by Wilson.
Wilson, Messina, and Wolfe each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Miller went 2-for-4 to pace the Mountain Lions.
Concord reliever Tim Leather (3.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 4 Ks, 0 BB) (3-0) gained the win. Chris Baker (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R) gained his second save of the year. Sophomore starter Jamie Driver (Broad Run, Va./Kettle Run) (6.0 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 3 Ks, 1 BB) (2-1) took the loss..
Shepherd moves to 9-6, 7-3 in conference play, while Concord is now 12-4, 9-1. The two teams return to action on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
