Box Score 2 WISE, Va. – Shepherd University split with UVa-Wise in MEC baseball action at UVa-Wise on Sunday. The Cavaliers earned an 8-5 win in game one while Shepherd recorded a 14-6 victory in a rain-shortened five inning game in the nightcap.
The Rams smacked 13 hits en route the nightcap win.
Shepherd used a 10-run third inning to take control of the game. Senior designated hitter Ryan Messina (St. James, NY/Smithtown East/Tampa) belted a three-run homer, while senior shortstop T.J Weisenburg (Hedgesville, W.Va./Martinsburg) and senior outfielder Michael Lott (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) each had two-run singles to highlight the scoring outburst.
Lott went 3-for-4 with five RBIs and a run scored and Messina was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored to pace the Rams.
Jordan Ollinger was 1-for-3 with a three-run homer for the Cavaliers.
Sophomore pitcher Sam Crater (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York/Frederick CC) (4.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 Ks, 0 BB) (2-1) picked up the win for the Rams. Wise starter Josh Blackburn (2.1 IP, 5 H, 5 R 3 ER) took the loss.
Shepherd took a 3-1 lead in the third inning in game one. Junior second baseman Bryce Shemer (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill/Colorado Mesa) had a two-run double to highlight the inning.
After the Cavaliers added a run in the fourth, they took the lead for good with four runs on four hits in the fourth.
Lott went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored to lead the Rams. Shemer and freshman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) each added a pair of hits.
Austin, Johnson, Mike McCollum, Bill Steven, and Cody Jewell each had a pair of hits for the Cavaliers.
Steven Klaiber (5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 Ks, 0 BB) picked up the win for Wise with Danny Bates gaining the save. Freshman reliever John Bentley (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (0.1 IP 2 ER, 4 H, 1 K, 0 BB) (0-1) took the loss.
Shepherd moves to 5-4, 3-1 in conference play, while UVa-Wise is now 2-6, 1-3. The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Pitt-Johnstown for a single game at 1 p.m.
