SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University swept West Virginia State in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Friday. The Rams earned a 7-5 win in game one and added a 14-4 triumph in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 4-0 lead in the first inning in game one to take control of the contest. Senior designated hitter Ryan Messina (St. James, NY/Smithtown East/Tampa), junior outfielder Matt Wilson (Baltimore, Md./ Archbishop Curley/Essex CC), junior catcher Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown/USC Aiken) and freshman second baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) each drove in a run to highlight the rally.
Senior outfielder Kyle Porter (Baltimore, Md./Good Counsel/CCBC), senior shortstop T.J Weisenburg (Hedgesville, W.Va./Martinsburg), and Wolfe each had a pair of hits to pace the Rams. Wolfe had the game's only homer with a solo blast in the third.
Noah Blackhurst, Trenton Porter, and Zachary Cloxton eadch had two hits for the Yellow Jackets.
Senior pitcher Paul Hvozdovic (Herndon, Va./Herndon) (6.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 Ks, 0 BB) (4-0) picked up the win for the Rams. Sophomore pitcher Ryan Pansch (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (1.0 IP, 3 H, 1 UER, 3 Ks, 0 BB) earned the save. Devin Bowles (3.0 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 2 Ks, 2 BB) (3-1) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets.
The Rams used a 16-hit attack en route the 14-4 victory in the nightcap.
Carney went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Wilson added a 4-for-4 effort with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the attack.
Senior outfielder Michael Lott (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Messina also drove in three runs. Wolfe added a 2-for-3 effort with three runs scored.
Eric Kraft and Blackhurst each had two hits for State.
Sophomore starter Jamie Driver (Broad Run, Va./Kettle Run) (6.0 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 5 Ks, 2 BB) (3-1) earned the win. State starter Russell Thompson (2.2 IP, 6 H, 8 ER, 4 Ks, 5 BB) (2-2) took the loss.
Shepherd improves to 12-7, 10-4 in conference play, while West Virginia State falls to 12-6, 8-6. The two teams return to action on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
