ATHENS, W.Va. – Shepherd University dropped a pair of games to Concord in MEC softball doubleheader action at Concord on Friday night. Concord took a 5-1 win in game one and added a 6-3 win in the nightcap. The games were moved up from the original Sunday date due to weather concerns.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one when senior shortstop Jess Mason (Martinsburg, WV/Hedgesville) singled and later scored on a single off the bat of junior first baseman Savannah Snyder (Elkton, Md./Padua Academy).
Concord answered back with two run in the bottom of the frame with Lauren Lewis and Lacey McDougall each driving in runs.
McDougall later added a two-run homer in the fifth to help the Mountain Lions pull away for the 5-1 triumph.
Allie Reid (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 UE, R 8 Ks, 0 BB) (9-2) gained the win for the Mountain Lions. Freshman pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (6.0 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 1 K, 3 BB) (4-4) took the loss for the Rams.
Concord took a 1-0 lead in the nightcap in the first inning behind an RBI-single by McDougall.
The Mountain Lions added a pair of runs in the second in the second and another run in the third on a sacrifice fly by to take a 3-0 advantage.
Concord added single runs in the fifth and sixth to extend its lead to 6-0.
Shepherd scored all of its runs in the seventh on a three-run homer by freshman third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson).
Mason and Snyder each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
McDougall (5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 Ks, 0 BB) (7-1) picked up the win for Concord. Sophomore starter Shannon Lyons (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) (1.0 IP, 2 R, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 Ks, 3 BB) (3-2) took the loss for the Rams.
Shepherd moves to 9-11 overall with an 0-2 conference mark, while Concord improves to 18-6, 2-0. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to UVa-Wise for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
