WISE, Va. – UVa-Wise swept Shepherd University in MEC softball doubleheader action at UVa-Wise on Saturday. The Cavaliers posted an 11-0 win in game one and added a 12-3 win in the nightcap.
Sarah Wiltshire went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and Charity Lawson went 2-for-3 with six RBIs to lead the Wise attack in game one. Lawson had a grand slam and Megan Dillion added a.solo homer.
Senior shortstop Jess Mason (Martinsburg, WV/Hedgesville) and home junior catcher Shanan Plunkett (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) each singled, while freshman third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) had a double for the Rams.
Rachel Hawks (5.0 IP, 4 H, 4 Ks, 1 BB) (9-2) gained the win for the Cavaliers. Freshman pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) took the loss for the Rams.
Kristina Romualdo went 2-for-4 with five RBIs with a three-run homer to pace the Cavalaiers in the nightcap. Wiltshire posted a 2-for-3 outing with two runs scored and Dillion added a two-run blast.
Witt went 2-for-2 with a solo homer and Mason added a 2-for-3 effort to lead the Rams.
Kelly Waycaster (4.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 3 Ks, 2 BB) picked up the win for UVa-Wise. Freshman starter Kirsten Barstad (Joppa, Md./Mercy) (0.1 IP, 3 H 3 ER, 0 Ks, 0 BB) took the loss for the Rams.
Shepherd falls to 9-13 overall, 0-4 in MEC play, while UVa-Wise improves to 15-6, 2-0. The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Fairmont State for a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader.
