FAIRMONT, W. Va. – Shepherd University dropped a pair of games to Fairmont State in MEC softball doubleheader action at Fairmont on Thursday. The Falcons posted an 8-3 win in game one and rallied for a 10-7 win in the nightcap.
Fairmont State scored six runs in the first inning en route to the win in game one. Amber Curry had a three-run homer to key the rally.
Sarah Parsons, Courtney Iacobacci, and Curry each had a pair of hits to pace the Falcons.
Sophomore outfielder Kass Taylor (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) went 2-for-3 with a solo homer to lead the Rams. Freshman outfielder Rubie Teffeteller (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) went 1-for-2 with an RBI, while freshman pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) also drove in a run.
Ashley Knight (6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 K, 3 BB) got the win for the Falcons. Sophomore starter Shannon Lyons (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) (0.2 IP, 4 ER, 1K, 1 BB) took the loss for the Rams.
The Falcons rallied from a 7-0 deficit in the nightcap to post a 10-7 victory. Ericka Aversa belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to lift Fairmont State to the sweep.
Amanda Skidmore had a three-run homer, while Sissy Stubbs added a two-run homer for the Falcons.
Junior second baseman Elisa Orlandi (Owings, MD/Northern) and senior shortstop Jess Mason (Martinsburg, WV/Hedgesville) each had two-run homer for the Rams. Freshman third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) added a solo blast.
Junior first baseman Savannah Snyder (Elkton, Md./Padua Academy) and Mason each went 2-for-3.
Nikki Nuzum (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 Ks, 0 BB) picked up the win for Fairmont State. Freshman starter Kirsten Barstad (Joppa, Md./Mercy) (7.2 IP, 11 H, 10 ER, 1 K, 5 BB) took the loss for the Rams.
Shepherd falls to 9-15 overall, 0-6 in MEC play, while Fairmont State improves to 12-6, 3-1. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host West Virginia Wesleyan for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
