SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University swept Wheeling Jesuit in MEC baseball doubleheader action at West Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday. The Rams earned an 11-0 win in game one and added an 8-5 triumph in the nightcap. The Rams extend their winning streak to nine games.
Senior outfielder Kyle Porter (Baltimore, Md./Good Counsel/CCBC) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a solo homer to pace the Rams in game one.
Junior third baseman Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown/USC Aiken) went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while senior designated hitter Ryan Messina (St. James, NY/Smithtown East/Tampa) went 1-for-3, drove in a pair of runs, and scored a run. Senior outfielder Michael Lott (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Joe San Felippo and Mitch Ludewig each singled for the Cardinals.
Senior pitcher Paul Hvozdovic (Herndon, Va./Herndon) (7.0 IP, 2 H,0 R,, 11 Ks, 0 BB) (5-0) tossed a two-hitter and gained a complete game win for the Rams. Logan Hudson (4.0 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 1 K, 4 BB) took the loss for the Cardinals.
Junior outfielder Matt Wilson (Baltimore, Md./ Archbishop Curley/Essex CC) went 2-for-3 and drove in four runs to lead the Rams in the nightcap victory.
Porter scored three times and Messina drove in a pair of runs as the Rams plated eight runs on only four hits.
Michael Adams and Tyler Kowalczyk each had a pair of hits to lead the Cardinals.
Sophomore starter Jamie Driver (Broad Run, Va./Kettle Run) (5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 Ks, 1 BB) (4-1) earned the win. Cardinal starter Justin Fritts (4.2 IP, 3 H, 6 ER, 3Ks, 4 BB) took the loss.
Shepherd improves to 18-7, 16-4 in conference play, while Wheeling Jesuit falls to 12-12, 12-8. The two teams return to action on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
