Hvozdovic Sets Wins Mark; Shepherd Baseball Splits with Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Shepherd University split with University of Charleston in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Charleston on Saturday. Senior pitcher Paul Hvozdovic (Herndon, Va./Herndon) tossed a five-hit shutout in a 4-0 win for the Rams in game one, while Charleston plated a run in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap for a 1-0 win. Hvozdovic (25 career wins) became the program's all-time leader in pitching wins as he broke the previous record of 24 that he shared with Shepherd Hall-of-Famer Ty Hart.
Hvozdovic (7.0 IP, 5Ks, 0 BB) (2-0) threw only 59 pitches in the game.
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning on a two-run homer by junior Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown/USC Aiken).
The Rams added two more runs in the seven as Wolfe had an RBI-single and later scored on a double off the bat of senior outfielder Kyle Porter (Baltimore, Md./Good Counsel/CCBC).
Sophomore pitcher Ryan Pansch (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 Ks, 2 BB) (1-1) took the loss in the nightcap in relief of sophomore starter Sam Crater (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York/Frederick CC).
Shepherd moves to 6-5, 4-2 in conference play, while Charleston is now 4-5, 1-5. The two teams return to action on Sunday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
