Shepherd Softball Sweeps Millersville

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Junior catcher Shanan Plunkett (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) belted a solo walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh to lift Shepherd to a 2-1 win over Millersville in the nightcap in softball doubleheader action at Shepherd on Sunday. Shepherd gained a 3-2 triumph in game one.
Millerville took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning in game one as Heather Lutz singled and scored on a double by Brittany Smith.
Shepherd took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth as junior catcher Shanan Plunkett (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and sophomore outfielder Shannon Lyons (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) each singled and freshman designated player Rachel Kline (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) followed with a two-run double.
The Marauders tied the game in the sixth as Gabbie Berry led off with a double and scored on a single by Ashley Cantiello.
Shepherd plated a run in the bottom of the seventh to gain the win. Freshman infielder Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) walked, moved to third after a pair of infield errors, and scored on a single off the bat of junior first baseman Savannah Snyder (Elkton, Md./Padua Academy).
Freshman pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (3.2 IP, 4 H 1 ER, 2 Ks, 0 BB) (3-2) picked up the win in relief for the Rams. Brianna Andraos (1-2) took the loss for the Marauders.
Millersville took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap as Danielle DeFilippo reached on an error and scored on a double by Berry.
Shepherd tied the game in the third as sophomore pitcher Shannon Lyons (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) singled and scored on a double by Witt.
Senior shortstop Jess Mason (Martinsburg, WV/Hedgesville) had a pair of hits to lead the Rams.
Lyons (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 5 Ks, 2 BB) (1-0) earned the complete game win for the Rams. Amanda Wink (0-2) took the loss for the Marauders.
Shepherd improves to 5-6 on the year, while Millersville drops to 2-4. The Rams return to action on Monday when they host Salem International at 1:30 p.m.
