SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University split with West Virginia State in MEC softball doubleheader action at Shepherd on Saturday. The Rams posted a 6-3 win in game one, while State took the nightcap with a 6-1 victory.
Shepherd took a 2-0 in the third inning in game one behind an RBI-single from freshman third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) and an RBI-double off the bat of junior first baseman Savannah Snyder (Elkton, Md./Padua Academy).
The Rams added four more runs in the fourth with Witt's two-run single highlighting the rally.
The Yellow Jackets scored a pair of unearned runs in the fifth and added a run in the seventh on a Maddie Best RBI-single.
Witt and freshman designated player Rachel Kline (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Freshman pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (7.0 IP, 4 H, 3R, 0 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (7-7) gained the win for the Rams. Anna Eggleston (6.0 IP, 11 H, 6 ER, 2 Ks, 2 BB) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets.
Dee Dee Loftis went 2-for-3 with three RBI's and a run scored, while Best went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead West Virginia State in the nightcap.
Kline had a 3-for-3 outing to lead the Rams.
Shepherd's lone run came in the third as senior shortstop Jess Mason (Martinsburg, WV/Hedgesville) reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a single by Snyder.
Eggleston (7.0 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) gained the win in the nightcap. Sophomore starter Shannon Lyons (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) (3.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 Ks, 0 BB) (4-4) took the loss for the Rams.
Shepherd moves to 15-19 overall, 4-10 in MEC play, while West Virginia State is now 20-18, 8-8. The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host University of Charleston for a 1 p.m. doubleheader for Cancer Awareness Day/Senior Day.
