SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University swept Notre Dame College in MEC baseball action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. Shepherd gained an 8-1 win in game one and added a 9-4 victory in the nightcap. The Rams extended their winning streak to 15 games. This breaks the old mark of 14 games set by the 39-7 Shepherd team in 1997.
The Rams plated four runs in the second inning in game one. Junior catcher Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown/USC Aiken) hit a two-run single to key the rally.
Travis Smetana went 2-for-3 for the Falcons.
Junior third baseman Bryce Shemer Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill/Colorado Mesa) went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored to pace the Rams. Wolfe went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored, while senior first baseman Brandon Coffey (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Senior pitcher Paul Hvozdovic (Herndon, Va./Herndon) (7.0 IP, 1 ER, 11 Ks, 0 BB) (7-0) scattered eight hits and gained a complete game win for the Rams. Zach Gresch (4.2 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 3Ks, 2 BB) took the loss for Notre Dame.
Senior outfielder Michael Lott (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs to pace the Rams in the nightcap.
Coffey, senior designated hitter Ryan Messina (St. James, NY/Smithtown East/Tampa), freshman second baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) each added a pair of hits.
T.J. Lett went 1-for-3 and drove in two runs for the Falcons.
Sophomore starter Jamie Driver (Broad Run, Va./Kettle Run) (5.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 R, 4 Ks, 1 BB) (6-1) earned the win. Falcon starter Matt Kastelic (5.2 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 4Ks, 3 BB) took the loss
Shepherd improves to 24-7, 22-4 in conference play, while Notre Dame falls to 15-13, 13-10. The two teams return to action on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
