Shepherd and Notre Dame Split MEC Baseball Doubleheader

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.  – Shepherd University and Notre Dame College split baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Sunday. Shepherd held on for an 8-7 win in game one and Notre Dame gained the split with a 9-4 victory in the nightcap. The loss snapped a record-setting 16-game winning streak for the Rams.

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in game one on a two-run blast by senior outfielder Kyle Porter (Baltimore, Md./Good Counsel/CCBC).

The Rams upped their lead to 4-0 in the second behind a solo homer by freshman second baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) and an RBI-double by Porter.

Shepherd took a commanding 8-0 lead in the fourth on a grand slam by junior shortstop Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown/ USC Aiken).

Notre Dame scored seven runs in the final three innings.

The Falcons plated two runs in the seventh on two hits and two Ram errors before sophomore reliever Sam Crater (Dillsburg, Pa/Frederick CC) fanned pinch hitter Taylor Neville to end the game.

Porter, junior catcher Jason Hepple (Margate, Fla./Highland Christian Academy/Garrett CC), and junior outfielder Matt Wilson (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley/Essex CC) each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Sophomore starter Ryan Pansch  (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 5 Ks, 0 BB) (3-3) picked up the win, while Crater gained the save. Falcon starter Jake Welch (3.1 IP, 8 H, 8 ER, 4 Ks, 3 BB) (6-2) took the loss.

Andrew Hurd went 2-for-3 with five RBIs to lead the Falcons to victory in the nightcap. T.J. Lett added a 2-for-4 effort with two runs scored.

Wolfe led the Rams with a 3-for-3 outing with a pair of home runs. Senior designated hitter Ryan Messina (St. James, NY/Smithtown East/Tampa) added a solo homer.

Redshirt-Freshman Mac West (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge/Francis Marion) (3.0 IP, 4 H, 4R, 1 ER, 2 Ks, 2 BB) (0-1) took the loss. Falcon starter Simon Davis (6.2 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 1 K, 3 BB) (2-0) gained the win.

Shepherd moves to 25-8, 23-5 in conference play, while Notre Dame is now 16-14, 14-11. The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host West Virginia Wesleyan for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
