SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University and Charleston split in MEC softball doubleheader action at Shepherd on Sunday. The Rams gained a 3-0 win in game one, while Charleston took the nightcap with an 8-7 win.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in game one in the first inning as freshman third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, WV/Jefferson) walked and later scored on a single by sophomore outfielder Kass Taylor (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown).

Shepherd added a run in the third as junior second baseman Elisa Orlandi walked and scored on a single off the bat of senior shortstop Jess Mason (Martinsburg, W.Va./Hedgesville).

The Rams got their final tally in the fifth as Witt doubled and later scored on a triple off the bat of Taylor.

Taylor went 2-for-2 to lead the Rams.

Freshman pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, WV/Morgantown) (7.0 IP, 0 Ks, 0 BB) (8-7) scattered seven hits in a complete game shutout win. Charleston starter Abby Nicholas (2.2 IP, 2 ER, 0 Ks, 2 BB) (2-2) took the loss.

Jenna Evans went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Golden Eagles in the nightcap.

Shepherd rallied from a 7-2 deficit with five runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at 7-7. Witt's two-run single keyed the rally.

Charleston scored the game-winner in the sixth as Hailey Tetrick reached on an error  and scored on a single by pinch-hitter Alyssa Stanley.

Junior outfielder Tayler Schaefer  (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and junior catcher Shanan Plunkett (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) each had a pair of hits for the Rams. Freshman designated player Rachel Kline (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) belted a solo homer.

Morgan Aguirre (2.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 Ks, 0 BB) (10-7) gained the win in relief for Charleston. Sophomore pitcher Shannon Lyons (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) (4.1 IP, 7 H, 5 r, 4 ER, 1 K, 3 BB) (4-5) took the loss for the Rams.

Shepherd moves to 16-20, 5-11 in MEC play, while Charleston is now 24-14, 8-8. The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Glenville State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
