SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University split with Glenville State in MEC softball doubleheader action at Shepherd on Wednesday. The Pioneers gained a 4-0 win in game one, while Shepherd earned the split with an 11-3 triumph in five innings in the nightcap.
Trailing 2-0 in the nightcap, Shepherd took a 3-2 in the bottom of the first behind an RBI triple from senior shortstop Jess Mason (Martinsburg, W.Va./Hedgesville) and RBI-singles from sophomore outfielder Kass Taylor (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) and junior catcher Shanan Plunkett (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown).
The Rams ended the game in the fifth with a five-run outburst. Sophomore pitcher Shannon Lyons (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) had a two-run single to key the rally.
Taylor went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored to lead a 16-hit attack for the Rams. Mason added a 2-for-2 effort with four runs scored and an RBI.
Lyons (4.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 K, 0 BB) (5-5) picked up the win in relief for the Rams. Brittany May (1.2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) took the loss for the Pioneers.
May (7.0 IP, 4Ks, 1 BB) scattered six hits for a complete game shutout win for the Pioneers in game one. Freshman pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, WV/Morgantown) (7.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 Ks, 0 BB) (8-8) took the loss for the Rams.
The Pioneers took a 2-0 lead in the second on a two-run homer by Mackenzie Smith.
Smith added an RBI-single in the fourth and Brittany Spencer doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Casey Schaeffer in the seventh.
Smith and Spencer each had a pair of hits to pace the Pioneers.
Taylor, junior second baseman Elisa Orlandi, and freshman designated player Rachel Kline (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) each had two hits for the Rams.
Shepherd moves to 17-21, 6-12 in MEC play, while Glenville State is now 12-20, 6-12. The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to play Glenville State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
