GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Shepherd University and Glenville State split MEC doubleheader action at Glenville on Friday. Shepherd gained a 4-2 win in game one, while Glenville State got the split with a 7-5 triumph in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning in game one behind a three-run homer by senior shortstop Jess Mason (Martinsburg, WV/Hedgesville).
The Rams added a run in the sixth on a leadoff solo blast by junior first baseman Savannah Snyder (Elkton, MD/Padua Academy).
The Pioneers got a solo homers from in the seventh inning from Morgan Scarpellini and Brittany Spencer.
Freshman pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, WV/Morgantown) (7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 Ks, 1 BB) (9-8) picked up the win. Glenville State starter Brittany May (5.0 IP, 4 ER, 2 Ks, 0 BB) took the loss.
Spencer went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored to lead the Pioneers in the nightcap. Spencer's three-run homer highlighted a six-run fifth inning for the Pioneers.
Junior catcher Shanan Plunkett (Hagerstown, MD/North Hagerstown) belted a three-run homer to pace the Rams.
Samantha Weaver (7.0 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 9 Ks, 3 BB) gained the win for Glenville State. Sophomore pitcher Shannon Lyons (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) (6.0 IP, 7 H, 7 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) (5-6) took the loss for the Rams.
Shepherd moves to 18-22 overall, with a 7-13 conference mark, while Glenville State is now 13-21, 7-13. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
