Shepherd Softball Swept by Fairmont State

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Fairmont State swept Shepherd University in MEC doubleheader action at Shepherd on Wednesday. The Falcons held on for a 5-3 win in game one and added a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.

Fairmont State took a 1-0 lead in the third as Nikki Nuzum led off with a single and later scored on an error.

Shepherd rallied in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead. The Rams scored a pair of runs on a Falcon error and got an RBI-single from junior outfielder Tayler Schaefer (Dunkirk, Md./Northern).

Fairmont State took a 5-4 lead in the sixth on a three-run homer by Carly Mundie.

The Falcons added a pair of runs in the seventh with the aid of a Shepherd error.

Freshman third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, WV/Jefferson) walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 7-5, but Fairmont State held on for the win.

Amanda Skidmore went 3-for-4 to lead the Falcons.

Sophomore outfielder Kass Taylor (Huntingtown, MD/Huntingtown) went 2-for-3 for the Rams.

Fairmont State reliever Kayla Robins picked up the win (3.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 7 Ks, 5 BB) (5-4) Freshman pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, WV/Morgantown) (7.0 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 6 Ks, 0 BB) (9-10) took the loss.

Fairmont State took a 1-0 in the first inning of the nightcap as Sarah Parsons was hit-by-pitch and later scored on an error.

Shepherd tied the game in the third on a solo blast by Witt.

The Falcons took a 2-1 lead in the fourth as Terri Lynn Wolfe walked and later scored with aid of two Shepherd errors.

The Rams tied the game in the fifth as Witt led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman third baseman Rachel Kline (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim).

The Falcons scored the game-winner in the seventh on an RBI-single by Amanda Skidmore.

Nuzum (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 Ks, 0 BB) (13-5) gained the win in relief for Fairmont State. Sophomore pitcher Shannon Lyons (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) (7.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2  ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (5-8) took the loss for the Rams.

Shepherd falls to 18-26 overall, with a 7-17 conference mark, while Fairmont State improves to 25-15, 14-10. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Wheeling Jesuit for an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
