URBANA, Ohio – Shepherd University swept Urbana in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Urbana on Sunday. Shepherd posted a 10-5 win in nine innings in game one and added a 7-1 triumph in the nightcap.
Shepherd plated five runs in the top of the ninth inning in game one to grab the 10-5 win. Senior designated hitter Ryan Messina (St. James, NY/Smithtown East/Tampa), senior shortstop T.J. Weisenberg (Hedgesville, W.Va./Martinsburg), senior first baseman Brandon Coffey (Manassas, Va./Osbourn), and senior outfielder Kyle Porter (Baltimore, Md./Good Counsel/CCBC), and freshman second baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) each drove in a run.
Coffey and Carney each went 4-for-5 to pace the Rams. Senior outfielder Michael Lott (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) added a 3-for-4 effort.
Jose Vargas went 4-for-5 and drove in a pair of runs for the Blue Knights.
Junior pitcher Bryan DiRosario (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield Secondary School) (3-0) (3.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 K, 1 BB) gained the win in relief for the Rams. Jeff Beall (1.0 IP, 1 R, 1K, 1 BB) took the loss for Urbana.
Junior catcher Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown/USC Aiken), Lott, and Wesienburg each had a pair of hits for the Rams in the nightcap. Junior outfielder Matt Wilson (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley/Essex CC) went 1-for-3 and drove in three runs.
Junior pitcher Austin Hale (Nokesville, Va./Frederick CC) (7.0 IP, 10 H, 1 ER, 3 Ks, 1 BB) (7-2) gained the complete game win for the Rams. Jackson Everman (4.1 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 2 Ks, 2 BB) (2-3) took the loss for the Blue Knights.
Shepherd moves to 33-10, 31-7 in conference play, while Urbana is now 21-16, 18-12. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Fairmont State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
